Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole (May 20, 1959 – June 26, 1997) was a Hawaiian musician. He became famous outside Hawaii when his album Facing Future was released in 1993. His medley of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World” was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and commercials.Through his consummate ukulele playing and incorporation of other genres (such as jazz and reggae), Kamakawiwoʻole remains one of the major influences in Hawaiian music over the last 15 years.

Mad Season
The Moore Theater
1995-04-29

Mad Season was formed in 1994 by the trio of Mike McCready, Barrett Martin and John Baker Saunders. All three had long been a part of the Seattle music community with McCready playing in such bands as Pearl Jam and Temple of the Dog, Martin with Skin Yard and the Screaming Trees and Saunders with The Walkabouts as well as blues talents such as Little Pat Rushing, Hubert Sumlin, Sammy Fender, and the Lamont Cranston Band. Immediately the trio set up rehearsal time together and wrote two songs, "Wake Up" and "River of Deceit", both of which would later appear on their album Above. McCready then brought in friend and Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley to round out the lineup.

Band members

Layne Staley - vocals, guitar (1967-2002) (deceased)
Mike McCready - guitar
John Baker Saunders - bass (1954-1999) (deceased)
Barrett Martin - drums
Mark Lanegan - vocals
Skerik - saxophone, percussion (touring 1994-1995)

[VID] Essential SNL Musical Performances (Round 4) [4 videos]

Round 4 brings us 4 great performances spanning 4 decades. Let's start it off with a story...
In early 1976, Lorne Michaels was trying desperately to get the Beatles to play SNL. First he offered them $2500 for 2 songs, then a month later $3000, and finally up to $3200(+food & hotels) for 3 songs. On Nov. 20th, George Harrison showed up at SNL and tried to claim all the money by himself, which Lorne Michaels happily agreed to, but NBC officials wouldn't OK it. This led to a sketch on the episode where George talks to Lorne about being paid "minimum wage."

[VID] Essential SNL Musical Performances (Round 3) [4 videos]

We start Round 3 with an epic performance for the record books. FEAR was booked on SNL because Belushi called in some favors for the band. Right as the last song begins the audio cuts out and the show goes to commercial. Apparently the producers panicked because they believed a full scale riot was about to unfold on live TV. Silly producers...
